Summary
This was the first team project in our Spring 2023 mechatronics class. We built a brushless DC motor from scratch in a week using enameled wire, strong magnets, a steel rotor, an arduino, and a few MOSFETS. The project goal was to learn how motors work by building one ourselves.
I designed a custom motor controller for this project using an arduino and MOSFETS since we could not get a drone ESC to work with our motor. I also designed the laser-cut stator to be as compact as possible around the magnets on the rotor so that we could have as many coils as possible with our limited wire supply.
We constructed our motor with a 3D printed rotor and a laser cut wood stator and electronics box. We achieved a top speed of 5000 RPM with our motor.
